Race Report Fingal Sprint Triathlon - Gold Medal for Bjorn!
The morning started great as the NAC is only a 10 min walk from my house, so no worries about driving or stress about traffic etc, so I was very relaxed going into the race.
Watched the first waves going off and then it was time for me to get ready. It was a bit cold and wet when I got ready for the race. Transition set up and ready to ROCK AND ROLL as they say !
I was in the fastest lane with all the junior Irish guys and a few guys I swim against in Swim Galas, so I knew that the swim will be fast and furious... However, It didn’t turn out to be like that, it was actually a straight forward 750m swim with no complications. I came out of the water in 4th and was very happy with that.. 9:36 for 750m is ok, and I didn’t work too hard…
Running out to T1 and it was dry - Happy days ! Transition went smooth and running out with the bike in my hand and helmet on… BUT so now its time to get onto the bike... Mmmm yes... In training this seems and is easy, but if you try to get onto the bike from the wrong side... Disaster... Foot on the shoe and then... Kadoef !!! I fell over onto the bike ! Shoes everywhere, water bottle out... I had to stop and think of what comes first ! I took my time and got onto the bike, which lost me about 40-45 seconds going onto the bike… Not to worry though
I caught the guy in first place at Dolly Heffernan’s and then from there I opened a gap that no one could close. At the turn around I made 20 seconds and felt really good...
Getting off the bike went smooth with no complications ! Thankfully. So bike down, shoes on and helmet down and there we go... Again the run felt good as well, I got into a nice comfortable stride and kept it like that to the end…I was thrilled to win this event for the second year.
Happy Happy!!! 1 min faster than last year!!! Even though I fell off the bike !
I learned my lesson in this race from previous... Don’t change things on race day to what I’m used to in training...no naps today !!
See you at the “Tri Athy” this weekend on the 4th June, Olympic distance race…
Happy training
Bjorn

Race Report ITU South African Tri Champs Port Elisabeth 20 March 2011
2 Weeks before the race I went on a Swimming training camp with a few guys from my swimming team NUIM Devils, a few guys from Leander Swimming Team and From Kilkenny as well. The Coach was Bobby Midane… great guy!!! A lot of knowledge .We went to Sierra navada in Spain, Not the sunny spain you guys may think… It is a High Performance Training Centre , Snow is a meter deep and very cold.. The centre is all about training.. Swedish, Check and the Russian Swimming teams where there and a few triathletes as well… All the training went well and I was well prepared for the race in South Africa. I couldn’t wait to get the Tri season started.
Got to South Africa… weather was great… Stayed at my Moms house.. Nothing better than Moms cooking.. Myself my sister, Mom and Dad drove down to PE(Port Elisabeth) I was sleeping the whole way as we drove through the night. When I woke up we where there… Great!!! 2 days before the race... Love the Atmosphere of a big race, Everyone is out swimming, biking and running at all hours of the day and the night..
Again all prep for the race went great, at times I had to slow myself down.. The Likes of Tim Don, Hendrik de Villiers, Erhard Wolfaart, Claude Exteen where there... All raced in the Elite World Champs In Budapest..
Race Day Came… It was warm... no it was hot… no it was ROASTING on race day... Warm up done and ready to race... The organizers decided that it was going to be a non wetsuit swim... actually wanted to get into my new TYR wetsuit, as I tried it a few times before and it felt great…
On your marks… BANG!!! The gun went off. It was a beach run into the sea with 2 laps of 750m. 5-6 steps later I got tripped… tried to get up... stumbled tried again and got up… looked up and the guys where 10m away… ( again!!! Head down and swim for your life boy... I said to myself… the faster I tried to swim the further they got away. Had to do the swim pretty much on my own. One thing I’ve learned in ITU racing is that the guys I race against do not take any prisoners.. give then 10 seconds at the start and they take 2 mins... well the first pack... I think the 2nd pack where between 20-30 seconds ahead of me. Got to T1 again on my own.. It was like doing a age group race..all on your own.. again…head down and push as hard as you can… see what happens.
The Bike was 3 laps of 13.3k each. After each turn around the two groups that formed was making time on me. Me racing against 2 packs of World Class Triathletes was going to be tough but had to be done...
I was on my New STORCK Fenomalist with 56cm Easton wheels which I got from B2R before I went to Spain… GREAT BIKE AND GREAT WHEELS!!! The bike felt like a dream but that dream didn’t catch the two packs in front of me…
T2 came up and there was still a few guys on the bike course wich I was surprised about, bike down, shoes on and helmet in the box… GO GO GO!!! F1 Pitstop… Cadence cadence cadence… arms arm arms… breathe breathe breathe… faster faster faster… and then it got even warmer…and then some more… every water station I had to take 2 bottles one to drink and one to pour over myself. That happened twice every lap… and there was 4 laps... alot of water, alot of heat. Ran as fast as I could, but as fast as I could wasn’t fast enough…
Finished in 16th place..
Have to go back to the drawing board on this one... many things learned… need to get faster… need to get stronger… need to get more efficient.. need to do a lot of things… but take one step at a time... Small steps now... big rewards later..
Till the next outing...
Race report Irish Duathlon Champs Burnfoot Donegal 3rd April 2011
Busy week before the race… Issues with my crank arm... didn’t know if I will be able to have my bike in time... back to work… but everything worked out... got my replacement crank arm from Italy on Friday afternoon, Got my bike built on Saturday (Thanks Paul)… new setup done on the bike (Thanks Dom) and race on Sunday…
Race morning... up at 4:20am... pack car… leave at 4:50am. My Dad drove me up as I wanted to sleep in the car before the race… got to the race venue and it looked like a nice day… sun out, no wind… exactly what the doctor ordered to make for great racing... got registered… Checked out the course and it was the same as last year... so… super confident about the race... Got the new bikes wheels on… and yes its another STORCK but this time it’s the aero version… super slick… and deep section EASTON wheels again from my friends at B2R.
Warm up done... ready to race...
Take your marks… BANG!! And we where off… the pace at the start wasn’t as fast as I thought its going to be... I knew that there was a few fast runners in the race... Paul Carroll was one of them. First 5-6 k was just me and Paul… after that he got a second wind and I couldn’t stay with him anymore… The new guy Cian Delaney just went past me at the end of the run... T1... Helmet on, shoes off bike off…
5 laps of 8k each, Paul made a 20-30 second lead on me… didn’t bother me that much as I knew that I will be able to catch him on the bike… lap 1… no difference in time… lap 2 gap smaller, and lap 3… caught… let the race begin….. and then the pain started… calf’s , hamstrings and glutes (Bum)...
New setup means new muscles used…
Lap 4 and 5 I couldn’t make any time on Carroll as we got to t2 together… F1 pitstop... Go Go Go!! T2 exit in first… Great… here we go.. first 1k went well and then the calfs, hamstrings and glutes started to cramp up… DON’T GIVE UP!!! DON’T GIVE UP!!! HOLD ON HOLD ON!!!
From there on it was a struggle… from first, to second , to third… and that is how it ended.. Third…
Was expecting more… but again a lot learned…
What did I learn… don’t change things a day before a race… change in off season and not in race season… rookie mistake… but that bike looks good...
Till next race...
Happy training,
Bjorn

Britain... Brains... Just another day at the National Aquatic Centre!
4th February 2011
Britain
The National Aquatic Centre is delighted to announce that the GB Paralympic Swimming Squad is booked in for a pre-Olympics training camp for the end of the year.

This is a major coup for the Centre, as we have attracted the hosts of the London Games out of their own country for a Training Camp in our National Aquatic Centre in advance of their own games!
We will have more details on this news item in the near future.
The National Aquatic Centre has already signed up the USA Synchronized Swimming Squad to base themselves at the centre for the 2012 London Games.
That makes it two very prestigious countries along with our own Irish National sides as we play our part in the run-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2012. Hopefully there’s more to come…watch this space!
Brains
We would like to congratulate one of our younger Members, Alexander Amini, who recently won the BT Young Scientist of the Year Award!

Alexander won the overall prize for his project entitled, “Tennis sensor data analysis”.
Alexander was presented with a cheque for €5,000, a Waterford Crystal trophy and the opportunity to represent Ireland at the 22nd European Union Young Scientist competition taking place in Helsinki, Finland this coming September.
This is a huge achievement for Alexander. His Father Sean and his family are all members of the Centre and are really proud of him…as are we!
Congratulations Alexander. The future is very bright for you and all at the National Aquatic Centre.

American Olympic Synchronised Swimming Squad to be based at the National Aquatic Centre before 2012 London Olympics
26th August 2010
US Synchronized Swimming has chosen the National Aquatic Centre, Abbotstown as its pre-Olympic Training Base for the London Olympics in 2012. The US squad of over 20 swimmers and team officials will be based in Dublin for 3 separate periods – a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament (2 weeks in April 2012); a pre-Olympic training base camp (2 weeks in July 2012) and as its training base throughout the Olympics (August 2012). The squad will be joined in Ireland by family members and friends at various stages during their stays.
Ms Sandra Mahoney, National Team Director, US Synchronized Swimming, said that Abbotstown had been chosen following a process where they had considered many options. “We have checked out all the alternative options prior to London and have concluded that the best place for us is the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. The facility is world-class and the country is most welcoming.” Ms Gigi Grizanti, National Team Coordinator, looks forward to promoting both the National Aquatic Centre and the sport of Synchronized Swimming through appearances and demonstrations by the Olympic Squad which will be open to the public. She went on to say – “We hope to leave a footprint behind for the development of the sport in Dublin and in Ireland.”
Ms Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport welcomed the development and congratulated the National Sports Campus Development Authority under whose aegis the Centre is managed;
“Ireland has a great deal to offer Olympic athletes and their training personnel, and the facilities available at the National Aquatic Centre are world class. I am delighted that the US Synchronized Swimmers have chosen Abbotstown and Ireland as their base for training in the lead up and during the London Olympics in August 2012. This is a first for Ireland and a great international endorsement of the facilities that we have to offer. I know that there will be a warm welcome for the team while training here and for their families who will join them to offer support. Given Ireland’s proximity to London, and the many accessible routes to and from the UK, we can benefit from a sporting, tourism and on a broader economic knock-on effect with the large number of people planning to travel to the Games from all over the world.”
Mr Patrick Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, praised the staff at the National Aquatic Centre saying that the news was great for Ireland “and a wonderful boost for the association between Ireland and the London Olympics. Congratulations to all concerned.”
Earlier this year, the USA Junior All-Star Swimming team was based at the National Aquatic Centre. International squads from Egypt, South Africa and a number of other countries subsequently participated in the National Open Swimming Championship.
Swim Ireland also has a permanent High Performance Centre based at the National Aquatic Centre. Gráinne Murphy, Ireland’s silver medallist at the recent European Swimming Championships, competed in the Abbotstown facility before proceeding to the European Championship.
It is expected that other teams and individuals will now follow the example of US Synchronized Swimming and reserve pool time at the National Aquatic Centre in preparation for the London Olympics.

The evening started with Mysterious Spinning in the Spin room and in tandem there was an outdoor circuits relay—both events emphasized fun, and there certainly was plenty of laughter as well as good work outs.

According to Teifion “We’re pitching the gym now as Dublin’s newest sports and health club - a brand new gym for our current members, and for those who were not previously aware of the full range of facilities at the Centre. As membership also includes access to the best aquatic facilities in Ireland, we can truly say we offer world class facilities to our members"
New members are always welcome at The National Aquatic Centre. A special 10% off introductory offer runs until January 17th 2009.
